FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

Are There Any Good Books Available For Cherished Teddies Collectors?
There sure are! All avid collectors can tell you, you are lost without them. Currently there is only one Value Guide in production.

What Do All The Abbreviations Mean On The Listings?
Here is a list of the abbreviations that you might come across while reading through The Teddies Trader. Sure hope that this helps out!

    MIB=Mint In Box
NA=not applicable - the piece does not have a registration # on it. OR
NA=not available - the lister didn't request a particular year.

The following abbreviations refer to the handwritten registration number found on the bottom of most of the CHERISHED TEDDIES figures. LR pieces begin with a letter, 3R pieces begin with a 3, etc.

    L/R (LR)=Lettered Piece - produced in 1991 or 1992; example - C7/234
    3/R (3R)=1993 produced piece; example - 3C7/234
    4/R (4R)=1994 produced piece, ; example - 4C7/234

How Do You Clean Your CHERISHED TEDDIES® Figures?
Well - I for one use a 1/2" artists paint brush which is relatively soft (brown sable - I think) and give them a good dusting. The ones that are not in cabinets get dusted weekly unless I feel like playing with them before that. The ones in the cabinet get dusted about once a month!

Enesco recommends the following
- periodically clean your figurines by wiping them gently with a damp cloth to remove dust and dirt.
- never use hard chemicals to clean your figurines and never put them in the dishwasher.
- remember to keep them out of harsh light or direct sunlight!

Additionally.... I saw mentioned somewhere that someone used compressed air in a can!!

Some Of My Pieces Don't Say CHERISHED TEDDIES® On The Bottom?
Yes, about half of the pieces do not have CHERISHED TEDDIES® printed on the bottom. It all depends on the size of the piece.

  What Is A Charter Membearship?
When The Cherished Teddies Club first began, all those who joined the Club that year are considered Charter Membears. Anyone who joined the club following that (in 1996, 1997, 1998, 1999) are regular Membears. Charter Membearships are no longer available! Only Charter Membears receive the Symbol of Membearship figurines marked Charter Membear. These are usually done with a slight color change, for example, Lloyd was produced with a green suitcase for Charter Membears and a red suitcase for all others.

Do CHERISHED TEDDIES® Pieces Really Fade In Sunlight?
YES YES YES YES YES!!!! And also when exposed to the lights in display cabinets!! Be very careful to protect these little bears! Fading is a very sad thing to see! And it decreases the value of the bear.

What Should I Do With The Papers?
Great question! There are many stories about the papers. While it appears that they are meant to be returned to Enesco, reports are that Enesco doesn't do anything with them. In 1993 they produced a piece - Customer Appreciation Piece - that was only made available to those who sent their papers in. That is the only year that they have done this. On the other hand, if you want to resell your pieces, the lack of papers decreases the pieces value. The logical solution to this dilemma is that you send in a few papers every year and keep the papers with the bears that you might like to resell or trade in the future.
*** There is a rumor that Enesco will start to charge for requests for new papers.

What Do You Do With The Boxes?
There are a couple of things you can do with the boxes... I leave mine the way they are and pack them in boxes which are stored in the attic. Some people flatten them out which increases your room, but then you have to either store the wrapping or pitch it! It's pretty much your own personal decision.

  What Is An Adoption Center?
CHERISHED TEDDIES® Adoption Centers are selected based on their sales volume within their area and other factors. Adoption Centers enjoy many benefits including a larger selection of pieces, priority shipping of the pieces from Enesco, and special Limited Edition pieces made only for Adoption Centers. 1997 saw the addition of several stores to the Adoption Center status, while others were removed.

Enesco does not publish a complete list of Adoption Centers, but you can find one close to you by either calling Enesco at 1-800-NEAR-YOU or using their Dealer Locator found on the Enesco website.

  What Is GCC?
GCC stands for Gift Creations Concept. Stores may join this group and subscribe to their catalog. GCC stores have special Limited Edition pieces created for and made available only to them.

  What Is NALED?
NALED or National Association of Limited Edition Dealers is another organization that retail stores may join. While the benefits to the store are not seen to the general customer, these stores generally have special Limited Edition pieces created just for them - such as the 1998 Lyndon & Lindsey - "Riding In A Winter Wonderland" .

  What Is A Catalog Exclusive?
NALED -- GCC -- Parade of Gifts -- Palmer Catalog -- Fall Catalog -- Spring Catalog
What does it all mean!!?!?!?!?   ...some retailers belong to syndicated catalog groups.  This means that a special catalog of product is created, and retailers who would like to mail this catalog out to their customer base, participate in the program.  Many of the catalog groups offer an exclusive piece to their participants as an extra incentive or reward for participating, and only those dealers who participate will be sold that piece (which is of course, featured in the catalog they mail out).  Note that some pieces are catalog exclusives (meaning that only that catalog group will get that piece) and some pieces are early introductions (meaning that those retailers belonging to the catalog group will get the piece earlier than the rest of the retailers).  Whenever a piece like this is announced, collectors should be sure that they clarify if the piece is exclusive or if it is an early release, as sometimes the word "exclusive" is used for both cases.

How Do You Read The Understamp?
One of the key features of all Cherished Teddies figurines is their unique understamp -- the information found on the bottom of the piece. The understamp tells you all about the piece.

Cherished Teddies®: Most figurines will have the words Cherished Teddies®, the registered trademark, on the understamp. However, in the past, these words have been omitted on figurines with a smaller understamp area. Lack of the words Cherished Teddies® does not change the secondary value of the piece.

The Name: This is the name of the figurine. In some instances, Cherished Teddies figurines have been created with no name, only their message. This is commonly done when a figurine is created to symbolize a general theme, such as all the figurines in the Our Cherished Family collection.

The Message: Every Cherished Teddies figurine has a special message that is found in quotations below its name.
Special Notation (if applicable): If the figurine is a limited edition or exclusive piece there will be notation of this below the message -- for example Limited to Year of Production or 1998 Spring Catalog Exclusive.

The Registration No.: This is the hand-written number found on the bottom of all Cherished Teddies figurines. This is also commonly referred to among collectors as the ‘Year Mark’. This registration number symbolizes the unique way Enesco has of tracking production quality. When Cherished Teddies were originally produced in 1991 and 1992, all figurines were given a registration number that begins with a random letter, thus any figurine produced in either 1991 or 1992 is considered a Letter Mark. For example, registration no. C3/124 would represent a piece produced during that period. The combination of letter and numbers has no defined meaning beyond identifying that piece. In 1993, looking for a way to track quality control further, Enesco began adding a number in front of the registration code. That number reflects the actual year of production. For example, a figurine produced in 1993 will have a registration number that begins with the number 3 (as 3H1/234). A figurine produced in 1994 will have a registration number that begins with 4, etc. In contrast with the ‘Letter Mark’ pieces, these pieces are refered to as 3 Marks, 4 Marks, etc. Future reference in this guide will mention these as 3 marks, 4 marks, etc.
With figurines that are produced in a set limited amount, the registration number is changed to reflect that figurine's number in the production order; for example, 1234/25,000.

The Copyright: Copyrights are obtained when the figurine is originally designed. This does not necessarily mean that this is the year the figurine is first produced. Figurines introduced early in a year will generally have a copyright date of the previous year -- for example, Mike, the March 1998 Adoption Center Event Figurine, was copyrighted in 1997. He did not make his debut until March 1998. In this instance both 7 Mark and 8 Mark pieces can be found. All Cherished Teddies figurines will contain a copyright followed by either P. Hillman or Priscilla Hillman.

The License: When Cherished Teddies figurines were originally produced in 1991 and 1992, their license was held by Hamilton Gifts, Ltd., a division of Enesco Corporation. Earlier figurines will have this on the understamp. In 1993, Enesco Corporation took over the license and all Cherished Teddies figurines created and copyrighted since then will have licensee Enesco Corp. on the understamp.

The Item#: The final part of a Cherished Teddies understamp is their item number, the 6 digit number given to every item created for the collection. Under special circumstances, letters are added to this six digit item number.
-- Figurines with the letter A following their Item# indicate items that were created for early release, generally as a Catalog Exclusive.
-- Figurines with the letter I following their item# indicate items that were created for an international production and release.
-- Figurines with the letter R following their item# indicate a Rare Bear.

When checking your Cherished Teddies figurines understamp, look for two key variations. The first of these is a blue ink understamp. The very first production run of figurines in 1991 all had their understamp done with blue ink. These are very rare. The second variation is a gold understamp. This indicates that the figurine is a Rare Bear.
