Listening Ideas

Listening is an everyday activity. Build on routine instructions to practice listening skills.

  • Jennifer, please bring me the book with the giraffe on the cover.
  • Andrew, please take a red block and a green ball from the toy box. Give them to Carol.
  • Please go sit in the circle if you are wearing red.

It is important for teachers to ask open-ended questions that encourage children to expand upon their answers.

  • Look at all the butterflies on that bush. What different ones do you see there?
  • Keisha, why did you name your puppy “Molly”?
  • Where do you think that ant is going with that food?

When reading aloud to children, encourage them to predict what will happen in the story or to relate what is happening to their own lives?

Does A Kangaroo Have A Mother, Too

  • How do you think the baby kangaroo feels in his mother’s pouch?
  • Did your mother carry you when you when you were a little baby? How did she carry you?
  • Have you ever ridden on your Mommy or Daddy’s back? How did that feel?
  • Who is in your family?
  • How can you tell when somebody loves you?

Classroom Ideas is your place to shine, so send in your success stories. How have you integrated technology into your center? How did you design your literacy-enriched classroom? How have you involved parents in the classroom? Share your classroom ideas and pick up some new ones with each visit. Email your stories to jsheppard@csc.csiu.org.
