How-To Guide: Creating Desktop Shortcuts
Desktop Shortcuts make it easy to return to a program or file that you frequently use. Just don’t clutter your desktop with too many shortcuts or you’ll make it hard to find the important ones.
PROGRAM SHORTCUTS
- Click on the Start Button, point to Programs/All Programs, point to the program for which you want the shortcut.
- Right-click on the Program Name point to Send To, and then click Desktop (create shortcut). A shortcut for the program appears on your desktop.
Example:
- Click on START. Point to Programs and Accessories.
- Right-click on Notepad.
- Point to Send To.
- Click on Desktop. The shortcut for Notepad appears on your Desktop.
FOLDER OR FILE SHORTCUTS
- Click on the Start Button, point to My Documents, point to the Folder or File for which you want the shortcut.
- Right-click on the Folder or File, point to Send To, and then click Desktop (create shortcut). A shortcut for the Folder or File appears on your desktop.
Example:
- Click on START
- Click on My Documents
- Locate Feb 23 06 Letter to Parents.doc
- Right-click on Feb 23 06 Letter to Parents.doc
- Point to Send To
- Click on Desktop. Shortcut for Feb 23 06 Letter to Parents.doc appears on your Desktop.
WEBSITE SHORTCUTS
- Open Internet Explorer.
- Go to the web page/URL for which you want the shortcut.
- Resize the Internet Explorer window so that your desktop is also visible.
- Once the page has loaded in your browser, drag the blue "e" using IE from the address bar and drop it on your desktop. An icon will be created on the desktop with the title of the page in it.
Example:

- Open Internet Explorer.
- Enter http://www.cyberstartpa.info
- Click on the Size Down Window button in the upper right corner of the window.
- Drag the blue “e” that is right before the URL or web address (or the “e” on the blue browser title bar) and drop it on your desktop. An icon for CyberStart will appear on your desktop.
