How-To Guides: Checking for Sound

Sometimes you just don’t know what happened but you no longer have sound on your computer. What should you do to try and get the sound back?

If your computer system has speakers, first check the speakers for sound:

  • Check to make sure the speakers are securely plugged into the correct jack/port on the back of the CPU. If not, plug the speaker cable into the same colored port on the back of the CPU.
  • Check to make sure the speaker power adapter is securely plugged into a surge protector. Try unplugging the speaker adapter for about 30 seconds and then plug it back into the surge protector.
  • Check to make sure the speakers are turned on. Is the green light on the front of the speakers lit? You may need to turn the speaker’s volume knob clockwise to increase the volume.

If the speakers are working or you don’t have speakers, check for sound on the CPU:

  • Click on the picture of the speaker in the lower right corner of the System Tray/Taskbar.

    • If the mute box is checked, click on the checkmark to remove it.
    • Drag the slide bar up or down to adjust the volume.
    • You can also double click on the speaker icon in the Taskbar and a Volume Control Window will appear.
    • Remove any checkmarks in the Mute boxes by clicking on the checkmark.
    • Drag the slide bars up or down to adjust the volume.
