How-To Guides: How to Restore Files

Follow the following steps to restore your files.

  • Place your backup CD or diskette in the appropriate drive.
  • Click on ‘START’. Select ‘All Program’, ‘Accessories,’ ‘System Tools.’
  • Click on ‘Backup.’

  • Click on ‘Next.’

  • The Backup or Restore screen offers a choice between backing up files and restoring files. Since you are now restoring your files, click on ‘Restore files and settings’ and click on “Next.”

  • Your next choice is what to restore. Click on the name of your back up file which will appear under “Backup Identification Label” on the right side of the screen and click on “Next.”

  • The file name now appears on the left side of the screen. Click on the plus sign in front of the file name to reveal a new check box. Click on the box to place a check mark in the files to be restored. Click on “Next.

  • The verification screen will appear. This screen also allows you to choose advanced options. Click on ‘Advanced.’

  • The Where to Restore screen allows for choices of where to restore your files. Choose the default “Original Location” and click on ‘Next.’

  • The How to Restore screen offers options that you may choose to alter.
  • Most often you will choose to “Replace existing files if they are older than the backup files’
  • If you want to restore the backup files and maintain any existing files with the same names, choose “Leave existing files.”
  • The remaining option, “Replace exiting files’ will cause your backup to replaced the files on your computer with backup versions even if the backup version of the file is an older version than the file on the computer.

Select “Replace existing files if they are older than the backup files’ and click on “Next.”

  • The Advanced Restore Options screen should be bypassed unless you have a thorough understanding of each option.  Without changing the defaults, click on “Next.”

  • The restore is now ready to begin. Click on “Finish” to start the Restore process.

  • The status of the Restore process will appear on the screenIf more than one disk was used to back up the data, you will be asked to swap disks during the Restore process.

  • When the restore process is complete, a final report will appear. If you have restored all files, you may find that some files have been skipped, as in this example. To view the report, click on “Report.”

  • This report shows that no user files were omitted from the Restore process. The Restore process skips certain system files that do not need to be replaced and reports accordingly. This is not a problem and can be safely ignored. Click on “Close” to end the Restore process. You can save your Restore disks or write over them in your next regular Backup.
