How-To Guides: Displaying or Hiding Toolbars
A toolbar is a row of buttons or icons used to carry out commands. Clicking on the buttons in the toolbar activates the functions of the program you are using. You can choose which toolbars to display or hide based on the tasks you need.
Displaying or Hiding Toolbars
- Click on the ‘View’ menu at the top of the Word window.

- Click on ‘Toolbars’ and a list of toolbars will appear. Toolbars with checkmarks beside them are displayed in your Word window. Toolbars without checkmarks are not displayed.
- Click the name of the toolbar you would like to display. The toolbar selected will usually be displayed as the last toolbar.
- Standard and Formatting are the most frequently used toolbars, so make certain they are both turned on.
- Sometimes two toolbars will end up on the same line, causing you to see only some of each toolbar’s buttons. To see the remaining buttons of the entire toolbar:
- Click on the double arrows of the
button. This will show the remaining buttons for the toolbar.

- To move the toolbars to separate lines, move the mouse over the

The mouse pointer will look like
. - Drag the toolbar to the desired location.
Note: Resting your mouse over a toolbar button (pointing at the button and holding it) for 2 to 3 seconds will cause a rollover to appear that will tell you what that button does.
