How-To Guides: Keyboard Shortcuts Using Control (Ctrl) Keys

Most folks use a mouse to scroll through a document and position the cursor where it is needed. However, there are keyboard shortcuts that can also be used, and one of these is the Control (Ctrl) Keys. To use these shortcuts, simply hold down the Ctrl key and press the letter for the command.

The Ctrl keys are listed below for the letters A through Z. Not all of the shortcuts will apply to what you want to do, so try a few to see how they work and which ones you will use.

 

Ctrl A Highlights or selects the entire document
Ctrl B Bolds the selection
Ctrl C Copies the selected text to the clipboard
Ctrl D Opens the Font dialog box so that a specific font can be chosen
Ctrl E Centers the text in the middle of the page
Ctrl F  Opens the Find tab in the Find and Replace dialog box so that you can find specific text
Ctrl G  Opens the Go To tab in the Find and Replace dialog box so that you can find a section, page, etc. in the document
Ctrl H Opens the Replace tab in the Find and Replace dialog box so that you can find specific text and replace it with other text
Ctrl I   Changes the print to italics. To remove the italics, press the Ctrl I again.
Ctrl J  Fully justifies the text
Ctrl K  Opens the Insert Hyperlink dialog box
Ctrl L  Aligns the text on the left side of the page
Ctrl M Tabs the text
Ctrl N    Opens a new blank document
Ctrl O Opens the Open dialog box to find a saved document
Ctrl P Prints the current page
Ctrl R Aligns the text on the right side of the page
Ctrl S Saves the document
Ctrl U Underlines the text. Press Ctrl U a second time to stop underlining.
Ctrl V Pastes the cut or copied selection
Ctrl W  Opens the save changes dialog box
Ctrl Z Cancels the last change to the document
