Spotlight on Safety
Children
Children may not always care about safety but parents and caregivers do, so this month, CyberStart is focussing on Safety. There are many websites that help children understand how to become safe kids – in CyberSpace and in the real world. Here are a couple sites that can help promote “Safe Kids”.
Knowing My 8 Rules for Safety
A colorful, printable chart which outlines 8 simple rules for children to follow in order to stay safe.
McGruff Safety
Kids love the McGruff character, and this site offers a number of educational activities featuring McGruff. Try the Problem Solver series. You’ll have to read the stories to preschoolers but they can figure out the answers themselves.
Parents
SAFE KIDS safety check list covers many topics, including: Baby, Bike/Helmet, Car, Fire, Firearms, Hidden Hazards, Home, Pedestrian, Poison, School/Playground, Special Needs, Sports/Recreation, Summer, Toddler, Toys, and Water safety.
Kids.us
Finally, there’s a place on the Internet that parents, educators, and children under 13 can trust for appropriate online education and entertainment: kids.us. It’s the first and only “child-friendly” Web space established by the United States, and it’s complete with advanced technical, policy, and operational mechanisms that keep children informed and protected. The following information or content is not permitted within the kids.us domain: – Mature content, Pornography, Inappropriate language, Violence, Hate speech, Drugs, Alcohol, Tobacco, Gambling, Weapons. For now, look for Disney, PBS, NBC and a few others, and hopefully a lot more organizations will come on board to create a large safe haven on the web.
SafeKids.Com
A great beginning for parents who want to learn more about the Internet. This site offers Guidelines for Parents, Kids Rules for Online Safety, a Family Contract for Online Safety, a list of good sites for kids and families, a list of child safe search-engines, lots of articles and how to’s about varied technology issues, and lots more.
