How-To Guide: Fixing Scratched CDs and DVDs

Q.   My CD or DVD is scratched. Can it be fixed?

A. No matter how well you care for CDs, there may be times when your CD (or DVD) will get scratched. There are several ways you may be able to repair the damage.

1. The first thing to do is to try cleaning the CD or DVD. Even if the CD isn’t scratched, dust and dirt may prevent it from playing properly. To clean it:

  • Run warm water over the CD and gently rub it with your finger to remove the dust.
  • For stubborn dirt or oil, wash the CD with a mile detergent or liquid soap and water (or use alcohol instead of the water). Gently rub with your fingers.
  • When cleaning the CD, wipe or rub from the center of the CD to the outside edge in a straight line. Don’t use a circular motion.
  • Shake the excess water or alcohol off the CD and let it air dry.
  • Make sure it is completely dry before using it.
  • Try playing the CD. If the error continues, try to use the CD in another computer. If it works in the second computer, burn a new disc.

2. If it does not play:

  • Locate the scratch by inspecting the disc.
  • Polish the CD by applying a small amount of baking soda toothpaste (paste, not gel) on a soft, lint-free cloth.
  • Gently polish the whole CD or DVD by wiping from the center of the disc to the outside edge in a straight line.
  • Rinse with warm water.
  • Shake off the excess water and let the CD air dry.
  • Make sure it is completely dry before using it.
  • Burn a new disc.

3. There are also CD/ DVD repair kits that you can purchase.
