RECOMMENDATIONS

The National Association for the Education of Young Children (NAEYC) and other experts in the field of early childhood advise that computers used with/by young children should be:

  • Located within an existing learning center (i.e. science area, homemaking center), rather than in a separate area (i.e. one computer by itself) or in a computer lab setting. The goal is to integrate the computer with the other activities in the classroom.
  • Located in an area where equipment will be accessible, but out of the flow of traffic.
  • Located in an area away from noise and distractions where children can concentrate and talk quietly.
  • Located in areas where girls and boys will be equally likely to use them.
  • Positioned so that screens can be seen throughout the room and activities can be easily monitored.
  • Placed on appropriate furniture so that monitor, keyboard, and mouse are at the children's level.
  • Surrounded by 2 to 3 chairs to promote socialization and collaboration among children.

PRACTICAL GUIDELINES

Computers should be located:

  • In a safe/secure area.
  • Against a wall, with surge protector and cords placed out of reach.
  • Within five (5) feet of a grounded electrical outlet.
  • On furniture that can support approximately 60 lbs. per computer.
  • In an area with adequate lighting, but away from direct sunlight or glare.
  • In an area that is free from substances that can damage electronic equipment (i.e. food, liquid, sand, paint).
  • In an area away from direct heat.
